Panasonic DMP-BD30K 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player
Panasonic DMP-BD30K 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player

Manufacturer: Panasonic
Blu-ray means incredible full-HD images, breathtaking sound and 5x the data capacity of DVDs. Now Blu-ray means something else too: an entirely new movie-viewing experience, made possible by Final Standard Profile, which adds features never seen before, like four Picture-in-Picture modes including Enhanced Commentary (from directors and actors), Backstage Pass, Peek Behind the Animation and Audio Mixing. Combining a PHL Reference Chroma Processor with advanced P4HD (Pixel Precision Progressive Processing) imaging technology, UniPhier(R) — the Precise Digital Video processor — reproduces crisp, natural colors that are extremely faithful to the original movie. It does this by up-sampling the color information in decoded video signals, while the super high-speed P4HD up-converts content recorded in 480i/p, 720p or 1080i format to 1080p by correctly generating each pixel according to information drawn from up to 60 surrounding pixels. The image motion of each pixel is then categorized into one of 16 levels, from stationary to super fast. Image quality is further enhanced by Diagonal Processing, which creates smooth, sharp diagonal lines, and 3:2 Pull-Down, which optimizes the processing accordingly for film or video making the images look natural and lifelike. In addition, the DMP-BD30's HDMI output is Deep Color compatible, with 4,096 steps of gradation for even smoother, finer-quality images that meet Hollywood's stringent demands, so you can experience movies just the way they were meant to be experienced. With Precise Digital Audio, Blu-ray's beautiful images are complemented by exceptionally pure, accurate sound thanks to Dolby(R) TrueHD and DTS-HD(TM). UniPhier(R)'s advanced processing capability decodes these audio signals with high precision and outputs them in bitstream form with no degradation. It also brings re-mastering to Blu-ray for the first time, which compensates for data lost during the compression process creating a fuller, richer sound.

Incredible Sound Completes the Hi-Def Experience
With Precise Digital Audio, Blu-ray's beautiful images are complemented by exceptionally pure, accurate sound thanks to Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD. UniPhier's advanced processing capability decodes these audio signals with high precision and outputs them in bitstream form with no degradation. It also brings re-mastering to Blu-ray for the first time, which compensates for data lost during the compression process creating a fuller, richer sound.
HD Networking with SD Card
The convenient SD card slot on the DMP-BD30 allows easy viewing of hi-def videos and photos on your HDTV. Videos shot with a Panasonic HD camcorder are output in their original 1920x1080 resolution, while still images taken with a Panasonic Lumix digital camera are up-converted and output in 1920x1080 resolution1.
One-Touch Control from Your TV's Remote
With EZ Sync HDAVI Control, you can control your Blu-ray Disc player — and all your home theater components — with your TV's remote2. Simply press the EZ Sync button and select "BD Player" on the menu screen; the BD player's menu will be displayed and you can begin playback.

WARNING. THIS UNIT STOPPED PLAYING BLUE RAY DISCS AFTER ONLY 18 MONTHS!
If you Google this problem, you'll see that I'm not the only one. Unit plays regular DVDs fine. Won't play Blue Ray discs anymore after only 18 months. Called Panasonic - they said the warrantee was expired. So now I have a 7.65 DVD player. Thanks for nothing Panasonic - I WILL NEVER BUY ELECTRONICS FROM PANASONIC EVER AGAIN. If you only want a Blue Ray player for 18-24 months, buy this unit. If you want something that will last for your money find another brand.

great picture
Slow load, but once loaded it is a great unit and all the loading seams to happens only when you first load the disc.

Refurbished Panasonic DMP-BD 30 works fine!
I formerly owned a Sony BDP s300 for over a year but after reading the many excellent reviews on this unit from CNET and Home Theater, I decided to sell my Sony and cop this fine unit. So far there's been no problem playing discs, BD or Standard, and in fact it does boot up a little faster than the Sony but where it stands out in is the sound quality and picture. I was amazed at the rich sound of this unit when I played "Amadeus-the Director's Cut" in BD on this machine. So far I have not regretted my decision on this purchase. And at just under 0--it's a steal!! One more thing to add that the Sony didn't have, this machine has a memory if you stop it and shut it off---when you turn it back on, it'll go back to where you left off---no bookmarks needed here!!

A point of contention
I think its fair to offer my experience with the 30K. I bought my 30K in Nov 07 when it first was released directly from Panasonic Direct. The player started having serious problems playing BR disks by the second disk. I called Pan's support and they tried to get me upgrade the firmware. Well I did that and it didn't help at all so they had me send it an authorized repair shop half way across the country.
(I was already a little annoyed since effectively they send me a defective unit, they should have ship me a new one and had me ship mine back to them and taken the repair on their shoulders.)
Then I had to jump through hoops to prove that this was all authorized within the first 30 days of owning it as they didn't want to repair it on their own dime. I had called support to log the issue in the first 5 days! I had the RMA within 15 days and the rest was shipping related delays due to the holidays. Eventually they owned up and fixed the unit.
The repair slip said that the transport was bad and was replaced. Fine, but again I was annoyed that I had to spend nearly 3 months without a player when it was clear defective from the get go.
Now, I have had the unit a year and a half, less with it actually working. Its kaput! It won't recognize any disk, be it blu-ray or DVD. Just before this it had given us grief for about a month talking directly to a Pan plasma bought at the same time, both are HDMI-CEC. It would occasionally show only a red picture and after shutting down and restarting a few times it would finally work. The cable was ruled out, as I tested a few and also tested on another player.
Panasonic support hasn't even replied to my email send over a week ago.
Caveat Emptor! I am going to get an Oppo Blu-ray when it is released. Their support is good and their DVD player I own is excellent.

Great standalone!
I have owned this for two months and have nothing but good thigns to say about it. Load/start-up time is MUCH quicker than my other blu-ray player (Samsung BDP1400) and from what I have read, much quicker than most blu-ray players. i would say that it takes about 15 seconds to get going, which is not bad at all. The upconversion from SD dvd's is amazing and the Blu-rays look out of this world.
The only complaint I have is that the remote is not backlit and when you are watching TV in the dark it can become annoying.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this player to anyone looking to buy a stand-alone.

Died after having it about 2 years
mine just died tonight after so many issues with it recently for the past month, volume had to be on 70 to hear it with blue ray movies but regular movies were fine.so tonight went to put the movie in crank 2 blue ray and the little window was so tiny i could hardly see it,and then it would not play and then i played the movie and then screen was so tiny,i mean very tiny,so i tried to eject it and there was issues with it,i tried everything. I even hooked it up compnent cable and that did not work,so needless to say,its time for the grave for this sony blue ray player. it did last 2 years but still,i took care of very well .I paid 400.00 plus tax for mine almost 2 years agop,so i used it alot, but come on..ridicouls.so never again with sony, never ..anyhow i would not buy this product,it does not have new updates and no netflix etc.well sadly enough to admit time to go back to my regular dvd player, good thing i did not sell old one LOL..

Stops being able to play Blu-ray discs
I've had my BDP-S350 for about a year now, and in that time I've used it infrequently at best. It now, inexplicably, refuses to recognize any Blu-ray disc I put in. Standard DVDs play fine, but BDs do not, and it's a problem I found is documented on AV forums and the reviews on Sony's own site. Most guesses are that the blue lasers are unreliable, as it seems to be a problem consistent across multiple firmware updates. Additionally, I didn't change my firmware between when I last played a BD disc and now.
For a player as expensive as this one, it seems to have an incredibly short lifespan. If you waste your money on this, expect to be buying a new player soon after.

Good Player For the Money.
This player is great value for the money. I have owned mine for a little over a year now and it has worked flawlessly as far as playing regular blu-ray and Dvd movies is concerned. My only gripe is that despite repeated firmware updates the player still cannot seem to decode the so-called BD-Live contents even when the disc menu clearly shows it is available. I hooked mine permanently to my DSL Modem and it downloads and installs updates automatically whenever it is available. It even recently downloaded updates for my Sony Bravia LCD TV. When I purchased it from Best Buy I was told that it would be BD-Live capable with future firmware updates and the manufacturer's description clearly promised this too but alas it seem like a bogus claim. Another thing is that it sometimes 'forgets' where it stopped playback and starts from the beginnning unlike my regular Sony RDR-VX560 1080p Tunerless DVD Recorder/VHS Combo Player which always starts from where it stopped the last time. Minor gripe
So if you're buying this for playback of regular movies then go ahead but if you plan on viewing BD Live contents over the web try another model.

Sony BDP-S350 vs. Panasonic DMP-BD30K
Sony BDP-S350 vs. Panasonic DMP-BD30K: I HAVE HAD EXCELLENT EXPERIENCE WITH THIS PLAYER SINCE LATE 2008. GREAT UPGRADE CONVERSION AND DOESN'T TAKE LONG TO LOAD.

Stopped playing Bluray discs after firmware update
The unit worked fine for 13 months (12 month warranty of course). I decided to upgrade to firmware v20 to maybe get some additional features/functionality. Now when I put in a Blueray disc, the player says "unknown". I spent 2 hrs on the phone with Sony to no avail. Now I have an overpriced DVD only player!
Sony just lost a loyal customer.

The Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass through hidden side speakers. DO NOT BUY!! samsung model number LN T4042 H
I agree with the other review 00 and 2 1/2 years later, the TV won't turn! I have a Zenith from 1993 that works perfect!!! Never an issue. I will never buy Samsung anything ever again.

WARNING - FACTORY DEFECTS
This TV has cheaply made, inferior parts that frequently fail after a year or two. For more info check [...] or just web search "samsung clicking sound" or samsung won't turn on".
Basically, the cheap capacitors on the TV break after about 2 years of normal use. It leads to the TV no longer turning on. This can be fixed by replacing a few defective parts (they will cost about B000N53SJM.50 each), but unless you are experienced with soldering electronic boards, you'll have to pay someone to do it for you. Total cost will be around 0 through Samsung or your retail outlet, or you can take it to a repair shop and spend to 0.
Samsung is well aware of this problem and unwilling to help the hundreds of thousands of customers who have had to deal with this issue. Factory warranty is for 1 year, and the parts conviently seem to last around 2 years. Samsung will not offer any help other than overpriced repair.
BTW - Based on my web research, this seems to be a problem with many samsung models, not just this one in particular. Buy Samsung TV's at your own risk.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

Warranty I bought was waste of $$$
Well I've had this TV now for about 2 years and It's outlived my extended warranty. What a great TV, bright vivid colors and deep blacks. Awesome TV!!!

AWAITING SECOND REPAIR IN 6 MONTHS
We purchased this TV just after Christmas. It quit working (no signal, could not turn off or on) in April. After several weeks and two visits by the repair people to replace two boards, the TV was finally working again. Less than two months later it quit again - no signal received. This time we have been waiting two weeks again for the repair people and they are supposed to come tomorrow. Each time we have given the repair people our home phone and cell phone numbers but once the parts come in we still have to play phone tag for several days since they won't call any number except our home phone and we are at work during the day. Samsung tells us that if it breaks once more during the year warranty they will finally replace. My fear is that it will break again just after the warranty has expired. We paid a lot for this TV and I feel that it was wasted and we now have no recourse! Also, when the TV does work the sound is horrible. We have better sound from old TVs that cost much, much less than this one did! Don't buy a Samsung!

Unbeatable value. Excellent display.
Bought this set last July after 3 months of research. The features that sold me were:
The picture on standard def channels, since I did not plan on paying for digital programming. I hijacked the remote at Sears and flipped back and forth from standard to hi-def on every set they had. While not as clear as my old Sony analog, the clarity is far and above comparable LCD's.
Looks great with my Samsung upconvert DVD player, and the onboard tuner picked up about 20 hi-def channels over my basic cable. The component connections generate a good picture as well. My kids' VHS tapes and Nintendo Wii look great.
The low glare screen has been great, since I mounted the set in a very bright room. The high-gloss black finished can cause some reflection, but a small price to pay for a set that looks this nice.
10 months later, I am still extremely happy with the set. Especially since the price hasn't dropped. Amazon has always treated me well with any purchase, be it 00 or . I was not home for delivery, but my wife said that they were professional and courteous.
